Although Severud Associates framed this three-story library building primarily in steel, cantilevered concrete slabs were used to support suites of reading pods on two mezzanine levels. Also unusual is the structural use of the façade’s Vermont granite masonry. The stones, laid in an intricate ashlar jointing pattern, combine with the perimeter framing to resist lateral loads.
